Survive The Road to Hana in Maui, Hawaii
There are 617 curves along the sometimes single lane road to Hana, passing over small bridges and along sea cliffs. It is also known as the"Divorce Highway"because of the blind curves and lack of guardrails. Keep your wife or husband happy by letting one of our experienced Hana tour guides, who are knowledgeable of the driving etiquette, make the journey more enjoyable for you, the passenger. There is so much to see, learn about and experience that driving yourself can be quite dangerous if you are easily distracted. It's not the destination but the journey and all the activities along the Hana highway so wonderful and famous, most of which is hidden from view in the lush tropical forest along the way. The village of Hana, Bamboo groves, beautiful waterfalls, exotic edible fruits, Hawaiian legends, folklore, history and so much more await you in the tropical rain forests of Hana Maui.
Maui Rainforest
The lush vegetation along the road to Hana Maui allows for many creative photo opportunities. Maui is blessed with both a dry, sunny side and a wet, lush side. The first part of our HanaTour winds through the lush rain forestsof North Eastern Maui. This gives you the opportunity to see, feel, smell and hear the sounds of our rainforest. Take in the smells of tropical flowers, the cool feel of crystal clear water pouring over a falls and the sounds of the tropical birds all along your journey. Let us take you there and you will be glad you took our "Road to Hana" Maui Sightseeing Tour.
Ke'anae
The Ke'anae Peninsula, created from an immense lava flow from Haleakala Crater, provides home for a few local residents, taro fields, great fishing, and great photo opportunities for powerful waves crashing against black, jagged, lava rocks. On Keanae Peninsula this old stone church was the only thing left standing after a tsunami in 1947 came across the Pacific ocean, slamming into the north coast of the Island of Maui. At that time very few settlements were right on the ocean, unlike today.
Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach
This is not just a black sand beach; it is a very special area for those Hawaiians living in Hana, a place where a Queen visited, a sacred place you might say. There are Romantic Legends to be told, there are sites showing the wondrous coastline, hidden caves and sea arches nearby. With our guides, you will hear the stories and lend your vision to a time of love, sadness and calmness. Don't miss out on these stories and explore this area fully with help from our Hana Maui tour guides. Check out the local blowhole, see turtles swimming in the water and during the season, spot whales at the mouth of the bay.
Hana Maui Tours
Truly, this is the "most Hawaiian" community on Maui and possibly in all of Hawaii. Swimming, snorkeling, hiking, fishing & sightseeing are just a few of the activities enjoyed here by locals and visitors alike. Home of Maui's Black Sand Beach, a red sand beach and the famous Hasegawa General Store, there is so much more here then meets the eye. There is a feeling of tranquility in Hana unlike any other place on the island. Heavenly Hana is an appropriate name for this serene place and it will stay that way for many years to come. However, if you have been the driver for the past three hours with your eyes pasted onto the 617 curves and 54 one lane bridges, tranquil is probably not how you are feeling when you finally arrive in Hana. Our guides can solve that for you...let them drive! This road to Hana tourmakes a few stops including taking time for a Classic Hana Picnic.
The Pools Of Oheo or Seven Pools
The Pools Of Oheo are part of Haleakala National Park and are located on the eastern part of Maui, about 40 minutes beyond Hana. It is formed by Pipiwai stream which creates a series of pools and waterfalls as it enters the ocean. When weather conditions are favorable, it is great for swimming. Valley Isle Excursions is one of the few tour companies allowed to visit the park. Depending on the weather that day, the pools could be open. There is still plenty of other things to do nearby, including visiting some of the tallest waterfalls on Maui and checking out the dense bamboo forest. You will be awed!
Palapala Hoomau, Charles Lindbergh Grave
Not far beyond Hana and the Pools of Oheo Gulch is Palapala church(founded 1864) and its tiny cemetery, where Charles Lindbergh is buried. People, especially those old enough to remember the "Lone Eagle's" historic flight, are drawn here like pilgrims.
Kaupo And Beyond Hana
Once you get to the Kaupo Gap, the tropical vegetation stops and the landscape is barren and dry. Here Haleakala's rain shadow creates an environment of yellow grassland dotted with volcanic rock. Just after Kaupo, the dirt road becomes a beat up pothole patchwork of a road that wheels along with the ocean far below. Along this part of Maui, few people live and it's mostly given over to cattle grazing and open grasslands. In the distance, on most days you can see the big island with it's towering mountains.
Tedeschi Winery
Maui Hawaii's oldest winery set on the rolling slopes of Haleakala far above Wailea. Sample Maui's fine wines, have a snack at the picnic area and get a little gift at the gift shop & deli.
